Altamura is a little town just above the ‘heel’ of the boot in Apulia in southern Italy but it is grand in many ways. In Italy itself Altamura is famous for its bread.  The region around Altamura was occupied by life long before humankind walked on earth as is attested by the dinosaur footprints found at circa 4 kilometers from the city. A human fossilized skeleton found in a cave, by the speleologists of CARS, is one of the most important discoveries for human evolution studies.

Or it might just be that you have never heard of this city. This site offers information about what can be seen and done in and around Altamura.  Sightseeing offers information about different interesting sites in the territory. Guided tours are possible for all sites.
